In fact, <strong>if Facebook runs a museum, it might be like in this video:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZq3cVgU5AI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">What you just saw was a video made by<\/span>\u00a0<a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitflanders.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VisitFlanders<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, a tourist organization in<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0reaction to Facebook\u2019s censorship policies. What happened? Basically, in June 2018\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-belgium-art-facebook\/rubens-m...ors-away-from-nudes-in-jab-at-facebook-censorship-idUSKBN1KG1ZX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook blocked<\/a> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">an advertisement for Rubens House Museum because it contained Ruben&#8217;s nude figures. The goal of the\u00a0video was to show how ridiculous the Facebook restrictions are.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Rubes case is not the only time when <strong>Facebook censored works of fine art as<\/strong> <b>inappropriate<\/b>. In March, Facebook<\/span> <a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/news\/facebook-censors-famous-30-000-year-old-nude-statue-as-pornographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed a photo of Venus of Willendorf<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, a 30,000-year-old sculpture, from a user\u2019s account.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Perhaps they are not fond of a little curve?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/yidUzil7u0LK8kbtvy\/giphy.gif\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><em><span style=\"color:#808080;\">animation by<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/gph.is\/1DqFw6d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JELLYGUMMIES<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Later, a Facebook spokesperson <a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/facebook-apologizes-for-censoring-prehistoric-figurine-venus-of-willendorf\/a-42780200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apologized<\/a>, explaining that they had mistaken the user&#8217;s post with an advert. Facebook says that statues are not included in their nudity laws, so it really was a mistake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Many artists aren&#8217;t that lucky when their artworks are taken down by a platform.<\/strong> If they post something that a platform considers &#8220;inappropriate,&#8221; They claim that the best way to protect nonadults from nude or sexual content is simply to flag it as &#8220;mature content.&#8221; A good example of such a site is<\/span> <a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DeviantArt<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">.\u00a0This has the advantage of assuring the artist or user that the material has not been lost, and the viewer that they can judge sensibility for themselves. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Artists&#8217; response to censorship had taken further steps. Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for promoting its Picasso exhibit. <\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0Again, i<strong>t was the cursed mixture of nudity, art, and advertisement<\/strong>. The cases of museums&#8217; advertisement materials being censored receive more news coverage, but, as I pointed out before, many works of art fall under Facebook\u2019s nudity law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">So what\u2019s this whole nudity policy about? The F<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">acebook<\/span> <a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/communitystandards\/adult_nudity_sexual_activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community standards page<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">states that<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">We restrict the display of nudity or sexual activity because some people in our community may be sensitive to this type of content.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On the one hand, as nicely pointed out in the<\/span> <a style=\"color:#cc0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/gray-market-facebook-art-censorship-1235822\/amp-page\" rel=\"noopener\">artnetnews article<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, Facebook\u2019s problem with censorship might be way more restrained than it seems. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/l0HlzwKCtfoPReRG0\/giphy.gif\" width=\"260\" height=\"144\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\"><em>GIF by\u00a0<span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/gph.is\/2e3aQmo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BLINK-182<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Facebook is a private, American company. Zuckerberg and his mates can afford to get backlash for accidentally censoring a legendary piece of art once in a while, or taking down an artist every now and then, if, in the end, they succeed in keeping out of Facebook the content they don\u2019t want. They do try to keep their platform under the rules they have established.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">So, Facebook executives can set up any rule they want (at least in theory), and moderate their platform in any way they want.
