The art and tech people stretched ways of sharing, creating, and selling art, from the digital realm to the real one. I believe that two events could reflect (though, perhaps, in a slightly cracked mirror) the year of 2018. Funny enough, both of them took place on\u00a0<strong>art auctions<\/strong>. First, Christie&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">auction of an <strong>AI painting<\/strong>,\u00a0reaching the amount of $432,500. Second, the <em>live<\/em> self-destruction of <strong>Banksy<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Girl with a Balloon,<\/em> right\u00a0after Sotheby\u2019s sold it for \u00a31.04 m. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">So, what all of these mean?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/144SbuAASAFna\/giphy.gif\" width=\"346\" height=\"367\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"color:#999999;\">MONTY PYTHON GIF. Why cannot we see his gaze, nor any other details? What can his outfit tell us?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Let&#8217;s ask the artist. Oh, wait, but the algorithm is not too excited to answer our doubts. Even though the article on Christie&#8217;s website almost yells at you that &#8220;<em>Portrait of Edmond Belamy, bought for $432,500, is the first AI artwork sold on auction!!!&#8221;, <\/em>it is not entirely true.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Let&#8217;s start, obviously, from the very start. Obviously, because it is all about\u00a0<strong>OBVIOUS<\/strong>, a company created by three 25-year-old students from France. Having an <strong>algorithm-generated art<\/strong> is nothing groundbreaking for people who are into it, to the point that there is even an aesthetic type defined as<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:var(--color-neutral-600);\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>GANism<\/strong>. The fundame<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">ntal code used for GAN-created content was modified by <strong>Robbie Barrat<\/strong>, a 19-years-old art and code fan. Things happened and <strong>now<\/strong> we can celebrate the art of AI (almost-AI).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>General Codes, General Feelings, and, obviously, media coverage<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On<\/span> <a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/features\/A-collaboration-between-two-artists-one-human-one-a-machine-9332-1.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">Christie&#8217;s website,<\/a><span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">the sale of Belamy portrait is portrayed as a turning point which\u00a0signals the &#8220;arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.&#8221; The auction of <em><strong>Portrait of Edmond Belamy\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>definitely marks the breakthrough of AI-generated content gaining renown in the art world\u00a0and general public alike. Just as technology advances, the possibilities of creating art by reshaping, reassembling, mixing evolve. But it does &#8211; <strong>the problem of freedom, restriction, and ownership of art<\/strong> &#8211; the issue that we, as the widespread users of the <strong>Internet<\/strong> and technology, begin to realize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Firstly, a <strong>short recap<\/strong>. A Banksy-made copy of\u00a0<em>Girl With Balloon<\/em> mural painting, which was voted the<\/span> <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/art\/news\/banksy-britains-favourite-artwork-balloon-girl-john-constable-jack-vettriano-jmw-turner-a7858856.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most beloved painting in the UK<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">in 2017, was <strong>shredded<\/strong> in the Sotheby&#8217;s auction hall the second it was sold for a &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">price equaled the artist\u2019s previous auction record of <strong>\u00a31.04m<\/strong>,&#8221; as notes\u00a0<a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2018\/oct\/06\/banksy-sothebys-auction-prank-leaves-art-world-in-shreds-girl-with-balloon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a>. People fell silent, photos and videos were shared, and Sotheby&#8217;s got <em>banksy&#8217;ed<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/1kkwPKFvhqc3h76oXn\/giphy.gif\" width=\"397\" height=\"397\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/animation-animacion-expensive-1kkwPKFvhqc3h76oXn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#993300;\">Animation Art Gif<\/span><\/a> <em>by<\/em> <span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/happy-motion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Happy Motion<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">What it reminded me of is the widespread <strong>crusade against internet freedom<\/strong> of creation, remix, and <strong>ownership<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The phenomenon of Banksy&#8217;s popularity is how avant-garde and hidden artist, whose <strong>art ruthlessly attacks the establishment<\/strong>, is being praised and commodified by the establishment. Banksy&#8217;s art, which is supposed to be available for many, is taken down and sell for the benefit of a few. This practice is possible mainly because Banksy often uses public space or a private wall without permission to create art. Banksy shredded <em>his<\/em> artwork, yet it was (as far as we know) not\u00a0<em>owned<\/em> by Banksy. The money did not go to the artist, yet to the owner of the piece. The closed environment of the auction hall, of buyers and sellers, is not usually in the limelight. Banksy was trying to <strong>get our attention<\/strong> and make what&#8217;s elitist popularized, just as Banksy&#8217;s artwork became <strong>commercialized <\/strong>and<strong> materialized<\/strong>. Simultaneously, it was really a good prank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The institution and its members that Banksy criticized turned the criticism into merit. In\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/articles\/latest-banksy-artwork-love-is-in-the-bin-created-live-at-auction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sotheby&#8217;s online update<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">following the shredding, they remarked that &#8220;history was made: it marked the first time a piece of live performance art had been sold at auction.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Yet again, if the piece wasn&#8217;t signed by Banksy, this piece of history would have never happened.
