Zuckerberg likes it too, as you could read in<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/2018\/09\/28\/the-nipple-gestapo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my previous post<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">on art censorship, so artists on Facebook and Instagram have been annoyed for a while. However, stories like Facebook censoring Rubens\u2019 paintings or world-famous sculptures make more headlines than the struggle that photographers have to face. Especially photographers whose work contains the <em>evil<\/em> female nipple.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 436px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/13GIAl4R21YLgQ\/giphy.gif\" width=\"436\" height=\"245\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/okkultmotionpictures-facebook-ko-13GIAl4R21YLgQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Media Facebook Gif<\/a><\/span> <em>by Okkult Notion Pictures<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The problem starts with<\/span> <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/communitystandards\/adult_nudity_sexual_activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook guidelines<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">regarding nudity. Facebook says<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">W<strong>e restrict some images of female breasts that include the nipple<\/strong>, we allow other images, including those depicting acts of protest, (\u2026). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>We <\/strong>also<strong> allow photographs of paintings, sculptures and other art that depicts nude figures<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/37g9SRzkxkyOI\/giphy.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/37g9SRzkxkyOI\/giphy.gif\" width=\"153\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/477434105621119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram guidelines<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">sound slightly more companionable,<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\"> yet the consequences remain the same, that is, censorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons,\u00a0<strong>we don\u2019t allow nudity on Instagram<\/strong>\u00a0(\u2026). What did she do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0Male Nipple Template: <strong>the digital pasty<\/strong>, as she called it, so that the users can<strong> cover the female nipples with the male ones<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">As<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2015\/07\/22\/male-nipple-template-to-freethenipple-and-micol-hebron-go-viral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hebron recalled in the interview<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0in 2015,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I thought a lot about the <strong>absurdity of Instagram\u2019s policies regarding nipples<\/strong> (\u2026) I decided to adopt their own logic and try to use it against them<strong> to make a point about how sexist these policies are<\/strong>. That was when I created the \u201cacceptable male nipple template.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/4pUUgTJYIy\/<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">As tracked down by<\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/irl\/male-nipple-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Dot<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">, Hebron&#8217;s template gained popularity on Tumblr and was later used and posted many times on Facebook. It also became a symbol of #FreeTheNipple action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">As Hebron wrote in her<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/micol-hebron\/the-history-of-the-male-nipple-pasty-digital-pastyintenet-acceptable-male-nipple\/10156026210611987\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note published on Facebook<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">this month,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em>&#8220;Free the Nipple has a different focus, and advocates for women to be able to go topless in public without retribution. For my digital nipple pasty, I am interested in pointing out the sexist hypocrisies of the social media content guidelines &#8211; which police women\u2019s bodies more than men\u2019s.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">What does Hebron\u2019s nipple pasty have in common with the<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\"> nude protest in NYC this month? Before the sunrise, a <strong>group of over 100 people <\/strong>undresses to pose nude for <strong>Spencer Tunick<\/strong> in New York City, in front of Facebook and Instagram headquarters. Tunick, a professional photographer famous for his staged <strong>nude<\/strong> events, took part in the protest under the slogans #FreeTheNipple and #WeTheNipple organized by\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/ncac.org\/news\/facebook-agrees-to-reconsider-artistic-nudity-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Coalition Against Censorship<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">(NCAC). The nude protesting group, according to\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/spencer-tunick-astor-place-1561306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artnet News<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0mostly consisted of women with a few men. They were holding <strong>prints of male nipples<\/strong> in different colors and sizes, in order to pose with them and to use them as a cover for their genitalia. Women had the smaller <strong>prints attached to their naked breasts<\/strong>. After half an hour filled with photo-taking, the party was over.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/3o6Zt6Wsk9RQbsysrS\/giphy.gif\" width=\"408\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/blink-182-blink-182-shes-out-of-her-mind-3o6Zt6Wsk9RQbsysrS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naked She&#8217;s Out Of Her Mind Gif<\/a><\/span> by <span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/blink-182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blink-182<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/ncac.org\/we-the-nipple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#WeTheNipple<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">is\u00a0an NCAC&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">campaign, calling for openness for <strong>artistic freedom on social media<\/strong> and equality in <strong>perceiving female<\/strong> and male bodies.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The censorship focused on the restriction of female nipples, as they say, \u201cstifles artistic expression, and enforces <strong>gender discrimination<\/strong> by permitting images of male nipples while prohibiting female nipples,\u201d argued Christopher Finan, NCAC&#8217;s executive director in<\/span> <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/ncac.scdn6.secure.raxcdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/NCAC_Letter_to_Facebook_6.2.2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the NCAC&#8217;s <strong>official letter<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>sent to Facebook<\/strong>. One one hand, we are dealing with a s<strong>ocial media corporation that happened to be crucial for the private and professional lives<\/strong> of millions of people worldwide. Consequently, this <strong>corporation dictates<\/strong> the rules not only of using their platform but also of what is and is<strong> not acceptable for artists and viewers<\/strong> and which part of the human body is or isn&#8217;t <strong>sexualized by the hegemony<\/strong>. The message that got obliterated is the <strong>sexualization and objectification of the female body,<\/strong> both by society and by Facebook. <strong>Art plays a crucial part<\/strong> in here, as it is art that shifts the borders of what is and isn&#8217;t acceptable. It is art that often requires viewers to<strong> leave their comfort zone<\/strong> by <em>seeing<\/em> a different point of view. Censoring art limits the possibilities in which <strong>artists and viewers commune<\/strong>, which is exactly what social media was for &#8211; to make connection easier, not harder &#8211; but gradually cease to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width:598px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/dSdvPrKU0w8WGo4c9L\/giphy.gif\" width=\"598\" height=\"335\" \/><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It&#8217;s about reclaiming our bodies. Facebook and Instagram have missed this message entirely as they cling to negligent and blatantly misogynist policies that overlook the context of the artistic nudity being posted.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">c<span style=\"color:#000000;\">ontends one of the participants of the NCAC&#8217;s and Tunick&#8217;s nude protest to<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/spencer-tunick-nude-facebook-censorship-protest-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the CNN.<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">Similarly,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-align:center;\">Tunick,<\/span><span style=\"text-align:center;\">\u00a0while asked about the nudity in art and photography,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color:initial;text-align:center;color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/style\/article\/spencer-tunick-nude-art-installation-australia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0argued that<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">People want a sense of freedom when it comes to their bodies and public space &#8212; And the nipple is part of the case. No matter whether you are male or female, and what your orientation is, <strong>your sexuality should not be imposed on you by any corporation<\/strong>, neither should be judged or denied to you. Similarly, <strong>the sexualization of different body parts shouldn&#8217;t be automatic<\/strong>, because <em>that&#8217;s how things always used to be<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Having equality means having freedom of choice.<\/strong>\u00a0Freedom of preserving what used to be, while giving others the freedom of becoming, exploring, and creating new. <strong>The freedom to be who we are.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#800000;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2015\/07\/22\/male-nipple-template-to-freethenipple-and-micol-hebron-go-viral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hebron asserts in the interview<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#000000;\">back in 2015,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I think that <strong>addressing issues of sexuality can be a sensitive and tricky endeavor<\/strong>.
