The <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/czWbGuShkusjAn819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiostro del Bramante<\/a><\/span>, <strong>designed by High-Renaissance master Donato Bramante<\/strong>, plays host to <em>Dream. Art meets dreams<\/em>, an exhibition <span style=\"color:#800000;\"> <a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chiostrodelbramante.it\/post_mostra\/dream-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>as \u201c<strong>A theme that becomes a journey, discovery, knowledge, emotion: the dream<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/1xNBx6UfqRfcHz9wjy\/giphy.gif\" width=\"235\" height=\"235\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><em><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/stickers\/warnerbrosde-pikachu-detectivepikachu-meisterdetektivpikachu-1xNBx6UfqRfcHz9wjy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pokemon Explore Sticker<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">by<\/span> <\/span><\/em><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/channel\/warnerbrosde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@warnerbrosde<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Yet it&#8217;s more than just a dream<\/strong>.\u00a0<em>Dream<\/em>\u00a0is the final part of a <strong>trilogy<\/strong> dedicated to &#8220;<strong>the relationship between art and emotional stat<span style=\"color:#000000;\">es<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;, as pointed out by<\/span>\u00a0<a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inexhibit.com\/marker\/contemporary-art-meets-dreams-exhibition-cloister-bramante-rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Riccardo Bianchini<span style=\"color:#000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0The previously featured exhibitions were &#8220;focused on love (LOVE, Contemporary art meets amour, 2016), and enjoyment (ENJOY. Art meets amusement, 2017).\u201d The choice of dreams as the third theme <strong>promised an attractive opportunity<\/strong> to highlight the issues of <strong>postmodernity, spirituality, and technology<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/TFYu57RoHRdkI\/giphy.gif\" width=\"322\" height=\"322\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Dream Floating GIF. Found on<\/span> <span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/psychedelic-dream-floating-TFYu57RoHRdkI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIPHY<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The <strong>dream is the liberation of the spirit from the pressure of external nature<\/strong>, a detachment of the <strong>soul<\/strong> from the fetters of <strong>matter<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u2015 <span class=\"authorOrTitle\">Sigmund Freud, <\/span><span id=\"quote_book_link_93981\" style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/work\/quotes\/1758256-die-traumdeutung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Interpretation of Dreams<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Dreams remain one of the last elements of life contained in <strong>the sphere of what&#8217;s enigmatic and magical<\/strong>. Adding some of the Freudian theory to the overall experience of the exhibition would definitely enhance the visitors&#8217; experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But it&#8217;s tricky to find Freud in <em>Dream<\/em> (except for the bookshop).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It seems that <em>Dream<\/em> is not really about <em>the<\/em> dreams.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong><em>Dream<\/em>\u00a0is the representation of the idea of the dream<\/strong>, another dimension that <strong>transcends the physical<\/strong> nature of perception to enter the territory of <strong>emotion<\/strong>, of enchantment, of <strong>poetry<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"> <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chiostrodelbramante.it\/post_mostra\/dream-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcadmanila.org.ph\/danilo-eccher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danilo Eccher<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong>, an art critic<\/strong> and the Director of the <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamtorino.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galleria Civica d\u2019Arte Moderna e Contemporane<\/a>a.\u00a0<\/span><strong><em>Dream <\/em>is Eccher&#8217;s brainchild, <\/strong>as he is as well a <strong>curator<\/strong> specializing in contemporary art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>\u00a0Let&#8217;s give dreams a chance.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/giphygifs.s3.amazonaws.com\/media\/iP7kAUk7Qz0A0\/giphy.gif\" width=\"228\" height=\"171\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Dream Dreaming GIF. The <strong>audioguide<\/strong> is an essential part of the exhibition, as I am told while being handed in the ticket. But here comes the first surprise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Instead of information on artists, spaces, or artworks<\/strong>, I&#8217;m listening to what seems to be a pretty amateur medium or a <strong>teenage fantasy\/thriller novel<\/strong>. The audioguide is a set of unrelated stories, where female and male <strong>voices recall unrealistic adventures while being surprisingly into it<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Cool<\/strong>, but I would expect something more professional. The audioguide could be easily separated from<strong> the exhibition<\/strong> and neither would lose much of its <strong>contextualization<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>We are inside the museum\u00a0now. Darkness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">There&#8217;s a woman. Or, rather, a <strong>slow-motion video of a woman underwater<\/strong>. <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billviola.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Viola<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s <em>Sharon<\/em> (2013) is one of a series of <strong>underwater portraits<\/strong> of men and women. This\u00a0<strong>audio-visual<\/strong> work (the <strong>movements<\/strong> of fabric and bubbles are accompanied by <strong>water<\/strong>-related <strong>sounds<\/strong>) illuminates the darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-773\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-773\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_5261-e1564658012883.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG_5261\" width=\"339\" height=\"469\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Viola. <em>Sharon<\/em> (2013). <em>Photo by Natalia Stanusch.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>The space adds a layer of anxiety to this well-curated piece<\/strong>. Darkness enhances the <strong>ambiance of intimacy<\/strong>. She, just like digital users, are at the reach of your hand, but you cannot touch them. She is <strong>drowning in the digital layer<\/strong>, highlighting the absurdity of the<strong> screen distance<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>None of these issues are mentioned<\/strong>\u00a0in the audioguide or in the short description\u00a0opposite to the artwork. Pity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Thankfully, <em>Sharon<\/em> can speak for herself.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">After swinging among many <strong>site-specific and decent works<\/strong>, there&#8217;s a <strong>major attraction<\/strong>. The <strong>mirrors<\/strong> around the small corridor enhance the effect. The work is divided into two parts. You need to <strong>walk between them<\/strong> to get to the next part of the exhibition. <strong>After circa six to ten steps, the golden rain is left behind<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">As\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/tejrae.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tej Rae<\/a><\/span>, a Freelance Writer and traveler,\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/dream-exhibition-chiostro-del-bramante-rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">puts it<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>The shining star of the show<\/strong> was a room of glistening coin-like objects (&#8230;). <strong>No longer a new idea as much as it is a sure-fire hit<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chiostrodelbramante\/photos\/pb.120590601338168.-2207520000.1564490127.\/2639608856102984\/?type=3&#038;theater<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Tane <\/strong>is a prized architect with a lot of compelling projects on the <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/at-ta.fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a><\/span> with a <strong>manifesto of Archaeology of the Future<\/strong>. Why not pull down some of those strings <strong>instead of<\/strong> making the whole exhibition about <strong>inspiring selfies in the golden rain<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Not so long ago I wrote about how <\/strong><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/2018\/10\/09\/how-social-media-are-changing%e2%80%8b-the-%e2%80%8bart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Instagram changes museums<\/strong>.<\/a><\/span> Tane&#8217;s <em>LIGHT is TIME<\/em>\u00a0is a perfect example. <strong>It is neither impressive with size nor with the originality.<\/strong> While I was alone in the entire rest of the museum, this part was almost constantly busy with other visitors and selfie-takers. A <em>dream<\/em>? Not really.<strong>\u00a0It is just<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>\u00a0a <em>cool<\/em> picture opportunity for visitors #dream #chiostrodelbramante.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But here comes the hidden jewel of my\u00a0<em>Dream<\/em>. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ryojiikeda.com\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryoji Ikeda<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s <em>data.tron [WUXGA version]<\/em> (2011).\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_media-23\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-media-23\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-797\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_5293.jpeg?w=1122\" alt=\"IMG_5293.jpeg\" width=\"561\" height=\"421\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-media-23\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">One of the shots of Ryoji Ikeda&#8217;s <em>data.tron [WUXGA version]. The wide wall opposite to the entrance is <strong>covered in the bright projection of images<\/strong>. The screen changes, first slowly, then it speeds up. Various\u00a0<strong>data-related texts and numbers<\/strong>\u00a0appear. Through collaboration, this <strong>immersive artwork<\/strong> was made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Digitalization, automation, technology<\/strong> and its relation with humans. What&#8217;s the future of them? Is it utopia or dystopia? Are we there yet?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 316px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/giphygifs.s3.amazonaws.com\/media\/5kk4VunVBNtO8\/giphy.gif\" width=\"316\" height=\"177\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Animated GIF. Nonetheless, the<strong> fusion of repetition, speed, sound, text, darkness, and blinding<\/strong> blinking of the screen (a warning about that hung outside the room) are fascinating. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>Ikeda&#8217;s work is hard to look away from<\/strong>, though I had to close my eyes at the end when the harsher bit started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>The lack of any self-explanation of Ikeda&#8217;s piece<\/strong> <strong>provokes<\/strong> to ask questions with no easy answers. <strong>Visually <\/strong>striking, simple yet effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-775\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-775\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/img_5289.jpeg?w=782\" alt=\"IMG_5289.jpeg\" width=\"629\" height=\"471\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">One of the shots of Ryoji Ikeda&#8217;s <em>data.tron [WUXGA version]. Photo by Natalia Stanusch<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I came in with <em>some<\/em> expectations, which turned out to be a mistake. <strong><em>Dream<\/em> didn&#8217;t blow me away<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On the official <span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chiostrodelbramante.it\/post_mostra\/dream-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<em>Dream<\/em> has been promoted as &#8220;<strong>an exhibition about desires, expectations, fantasies<\/strong> and exorcized fears.&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Nice try<\/strong>, but I wasn&#8217;t inspired or traumatized before and after attending it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Experiencing this exhibition with the <strong>recent digital innovations<\/strong> in mind makes the experience at least disappointing.\u00a0A few interesting pieces are, in the end, <strong>lost in the <\/strong><em><strong>dream<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0A few<strong> site-specific artworks do the trick<\/strong> (of <strong>making you pull your smartphone out<\/strong> and take that <em>artsy<\/em> photo).
