{"id":961,"date":"2019-10-06T21:41:39","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T21:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/?p=961"},"modified":"2025-03-01T16:52:22","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T16:52:22","slug":"art-authenticity-john-cabot-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/?p=961","title":{"rendered":"<em>The Illusion of Authenticity<\/em> at John Cabot University."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">3 points on the role of authenticity in the commodified culture of today<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(and where&#8217;s art is all of this?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Illusion of Authenticity: Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"> at <\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johncabot.edu\/\">John Cabot University<\/a><\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">(JCU) was a panel organized as a part of the JCU Alumni Reunion on September 20th.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Professor<span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"color:#800000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johncabot.edu\/faculty\/brunella-antomarini\">Brunella Automarini<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, <\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johncabot.edu\/faculty\/antonio-l%C3%B3pez\">Professor Antonio Lopez<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, and <\/span><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johncabot.edu\/faculty\/peter-sarram\">Professor Peter Sarram<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, as well as alumna Fiamma Mozzetta &#8217;16 and alumna Elisabetta Petrucci &#8217;19, moderated the panel.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-970 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/img_7537.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG_7537\" width=\"360\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">Starting at the beginning:<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">The discussion was based on the iconic 1935 essay<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>by <strong>Walter Benjamin<\/strong>. In short, Benjamin\u2019s essay is a dense set of arguments on <strong>the concept of <em>aura<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0in art <\/span><\/strong>in relation to photography, film, and that the dissemination of images on the mass scale is <strong>the death of artistic aura.<\/strong>\u00a0Benjamin emphasized that\u00a0<strong>reproductions<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>lack\u00a0the physical conditions<\/strong> of space, time, and ownership.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#000000;\">These <strong>physical features establish authenticity<\/strong>, as well as provide <strong>historical contextualization<\/strong> of an object. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-994\" style=\"width: 291px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-994 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/21547252214017.5908fbb20d8e2.jpg\" alt=\"21547252214017.5908fbb20d8e2\" width=\"291\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.behance.net\/gallery\/52214017\/Expansion-CEO-Equipo-El-reclutador-eficiente\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Expansi\u00f3n CEO &#8211; Equipo \/ El reclutador eficiente&#8221;<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color:#999999;\">by Orbeh Studio is licensed under<\/span> <span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a class=\"photo_license\" style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/4.0\/?ref=ccsearch&amp;atype=rich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 <\/a><\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>The phenomenon of aura<\/strong> is a feeling of distance between a viewer and the object. <strong>The viewer perceives an object as seemingly out of reach,<\/strong> both historically and physically. Benjamin argues that <strong>art originated as a form of cultic worship<\/strong>, first related to magic, then religion, and then beauty. Hence aura carries a <strong>spiritual value<\/strong>. Benjamin points out that <strong>art has always been reproducible,<\/strong>\u00a0what has changed is the scale of reproducibility. He argues that\u00a0<strong>mass reproduction<\/strong> is the \u201cemancipation of artworks from ritual.\u201d Viewers shifted from <i>being<\/i> <i>absorbed by<\/i>\u00a0art to <i>absorbing<\/i>\u00a0art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align:center;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">Distorting the appearance of authenticity in three points.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">1. What you see is what you get. Artworks can be out of not only the artist&#8217;s power, but also out of time, even out of the political and economic system, without losing its value. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-982\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/zrzut-ekranu-2019-09-28-o-22.49.32.png?w=1060\" alt=\"Zrzut ekranu 2019-09-28 o 22.49.32.png\" width=\"530\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">2. An increasingly common practice in the music industry is to &#8220;plant&#8221; musicians. As Professor Sarram explained, \u201cplanting\u201d means to shape musicians\u2019 careers in a certain manner or style, crafting their personality and history to <strong>manufacture authenticity\u00a0for a<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0targeted audience<\/strong>.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0A good example, said Professor Sarram, is Lana Del Rey, who had her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2012\/jan\/21\/lana-del-rey-pop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">story and style reinvented<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>to appeal to the expectations of the music industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/giphygifs.s3.amazonaws.com\/media\/OwoMDMKflV3MI\/giphy.gif\" width=\"254\" height=\"208\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Beatles Smile<span style=\"color:#993300;\"> <a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/the-beatles-funny-cute-OwoMDMKflV3MI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIF<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span class=\"apple-converted-space\" style=\"color:#000000;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The question remains whether we enjoy music less if we know that it is a part of an industry-planned strategy of<strong>\u00a0increasing commodification and income<\/strong>. Even the well-established artists follow marketing paths in order <strong>to keep their image iconic<\/strong>. <strong>Does it matter<\/strong> for us that Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones would probably never have happened had they not had the \u2018support\u2019 and <strong>guidance from\u00a0industry professionals<\/strong>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"max-width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/KeqcgkATYyrnO\/giphy.gif\" width=\"307\" height=\"224\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Elvis Presley Images <span style=\"color:#993300;\"><a style=\"color:#993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/images-elvis-gifmania-KeqcgkATYyrnO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIF<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">Professor Sarram pointed out that <strong>Benjamin&#8217;s notion of aura is often misunderstood<\/strong>. Benjamin claimed that <strong>mass culture is erasing aura from artworks<\/strong>. However, as Professor Sarram explained, Benjamin saw this\u00a0<strong>aura as a human-made concept<\/strong> which adds fake value to objects. As Professor Sarram said, <strong>it is technology that might allow us to see through it<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">3. Goodbye, Authenticity (we will see you soon)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1002 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bbnmvbn-1.gif\" alt=\"bBNmvbN-1.gif\" width=\"233\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color:#000000;\">Does technology destroy authenticity? According to Professor Automarini, discussions about authenticity often rely on\u00a0<strong>a Romanticized notion of nature as authentic.<\/strong>\u00a0We see nature as authentic and good, consequently viewing technology as its binary opposite. Professor Automarini maintains that <strong>technology is neutral.<\/strong>\u00a0It depends on us how we use it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>&#8230;but can technology be authentic?<\/strong> Ai-Da is a good example of how neutral technology becomes authentic through the addition of aura. <strong>Ai-Da, which<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color:#800000;\"> <a style=\"color:#800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/hashtagart.blog\/2019\/07\/19\/quo-vadis-ai-art-ai-da-and-the-value-of-artificial-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I talked about here<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong> is the first humanoid robot-artist<\/strong> that depends on artificial intelligence to create original, authentic art. Or rather, this is what the PR narration and wants us to believe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>If what is human belongs to what is natural, then anything made or manipulated by a\u00a0human<\/strong>. She brought up an example of recording vintage train sounds. She argued that through hearing steam trains we are provided with <strong>an authentic experience of the past<\/strong>, which can stimulate our <strong>imagination<\/strong>. Elisabetta asked what is it that makes us <strong>value<\/strong> <strong>Picasso\u2019s painting more than a reproduction<\/strong>. Sunrise\u00a0<\/i>(1892-1973) in Paris,<\/span> <strong>artworks force a different relation of the viewers to the time<\/strong>. C<span lang=\"FR\">ontemporary viewers necessarily have <\/span>a different relation <span lang=\"FR\">to these works than did <\/span>viewers<span lang=\"FR\"> of a different historical context. Artworks themselves can provide a different view of the world and time<\/span>.
